Bible Study: Loving What Lasts
Do not love the world, neither the things that are in the world. These words from 1 John 2:15 are not a call to reject life, but a call to guard our hearts. In a world that constantly tells us to want more, buy more, prove more, and become more, God gives us a better invitation. He calls us to love what is eternal.
The world promises satisfaction, but it cannot keep its promise. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life may shine brightly for a moment, yet they leave the soul empty. We see this every day. People chase success and still feel lost. They gather possessions and still feel poor inside. They gain attention and still long to be known. The world can entertain us, but it cannot transform us.
Jesus shows us another way. He lived with purpose, peace, and holy focus. He did not live for applause, comfort, or possession. He lived to do the will of the Father. That same calling is given to us today. We are not meant to be shaped by the noise of the world, but by the truth of God’s Word.
This means we must be careful about what we allow into our hearts. What we watch, what we desire, what we pursue, and what we praise all shape our spiritual direction. If we feed our souls on things that fade, our faith will grow weak. But if we set our minds on Christ, our lives will become steady, fruitful, and filled with hope.
The good news is that God never asks us to let go without giving us something greater. When we release the world’s false promises, we gain the lasting treasures of His presence, His peace, His wisdom, and His love. “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever” 1 John 2:17.
Today, choose what lasts. Choose prayer over pressure. Choose obedience over approval. Choose Christ over comfort. The world is passing away, but the one who belongs to God stands forever. Let your heart rest in that truth, and walk with courage in the light of eternity.
