Bible Study: Persevering in Goodness
Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)
In a world that often feels overwhelming, where negativity seems to overshadow positivity, it can be easy to become disheartened. We pour our hearts into good deeds—acts of kindness, love for our neighbors, support for those in need—and yet, sometimes it feels as if our efforts go unnoticed or unappreciated. It is in these moments of doubt and weariness that we must cling to the promise found in Galatians 6:9.
The Apostle Paul is writing to a community that is struggling, just as we do today. He encourages them to persist in doing good, reminding them that there is a purpose and a promise attached to their actions. "In due season we will reap." This assurance is a powerful reminder that our efforts matter. The good we sow today may not yield immediate results, but God is faithful to His word. There is a season for everything, and in His perfect timing, the fruits of our labor will be revealed.
Consider the farmers who toil in the fields. They do not plant seeds and expect an instant harvest. They water, nurture, and wait, sometimes for months, trusting the process and the promise of the harvest to come. Similarly, we must adopt a long-term perspective when it comes to doing good. Each small act of kindness, every moment of patience, and every word of encouragement contributes to a larger purpose. We may not see the immediate impact, but trust that God is working through us in ways we cannot always comprehend.
In our daily lives, we encounter numerous opportunities to do good—whether it is lending a listening ear to a friend, volunteering in our communities, or simply smiling at a stranger. Each act, no matter how small, holds the potential to create ripples of change. The world may often reward negativity with attention, but our commitment to goodness creates a counter-narrative that reflects the heart of Christ.
Moreover, it is vital to remember that we do not do good solely for the sake of rewards. Our motivation should stem from love and compassion. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus, extending His grace and mercy to those around us. When weariness threatens to take hold, we can draw strength from prayer, scripture, and fellowship with other believers. We are not alone in this journey; we are part of a larger community that supports and uplifts one another.
So, let us press on. Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, we will reap. Let this promise fuel our hearts and ignite our spirits, reminding us that every act of goodness is a seed planted in faith. Together, let us cultivate a garden of kindness in our lives, trusting that God will bring forth a bountiful harvest.
